JVG Sound in the Community: Charity Cup Touch Football

February 3rd marked the 6th annual Charity Cup Touch Football competition hosted in Cabarita, NSW. Named Tweed Shire’s 2018 ‘Community Event of the Year’, the tournament brings together 20 teams and around 300 players from the area to compete in a day of touch football, friendly rivalry and community spirit.
JVG Sound supported the event by providing audio equipment for music and ambience throughout the day. Being a Tweed based company, we’re proud to support local charities and be a part of the great community philanthropy and generosity through events like these.

Each year the teams dress up in theme which makes it not only a spectacle of local touch talent but a bit of a laugh, too. This year was ‘retro’, transporting the field to the glory days with vintage jerseys and some even sporting a cheeky wig, just for the fun of it.

This year the Bulldogs took home the Charity Cup after an exhilarating drop-off final against the Seagulls, going into extra time and winning by just a single point. The win was especially important to the team, as they raised the trophy in victory for their mate James Tate who sadly passed in early 2017.

The event raises money for people in the local community in need of financial assistance due to sickness or hardship, and in the last six years has raised over $150,000 for more than 40 recipients.

“It all started with one of our mates, he had a few health issues and we decided to run the day to raise some money to help him out. That turned out to be a big success, everyone had such a great day and the next year the boys wanted to keep doing it, but we weren’t sure what to do with the money.
We saw people in the community who needed help with health or family issues, so made a list at the end of the year and decided to donate the money to them.”
says Mike Ashburn, one of the organisers of the Cup.

The 2018 Charity Cup winners, the Bulldogs fought to the bitter end for the win.

He says this year’s Cup was another great success, raising a record $50,000 and proves that the spirit in which the cup was created is still strong in the Tweed.

“I guess the beauty of it is that people come out on the day, they get the jersey and all that, they get to have a good day and our awesome sponsors like you make it an easy way to give back to the community. I think days like this are great because everyone can catch up in a better situation than, say, a funeral or something where we can grieve and give back but be happy at the same time.”

Stay tuned for more news on where this year’s earnings will be donated later this year.
